Goodbye, 2013

Tis the season, as they say (whoever ‘they’ are), and websites, blogs, newspapers, magazines and our television screens are filled with end-of-year lists, best-of’s, and gift guides or recommendations for the New Year. We’re resisting the trend, and while we can share a few ideas about gift giving, we’d rather thank our readers and followers for supporting us in this our first year of existence.
2013On the subject of gifts, while cash is king it is also gauche, unless you’re giving to charity or a college kid (isn’t that the same thing?), or giving so much that it will make a big difference in the recipient’s life; less vulgar is the gift certificate—but the most thoughtful is the present that the recipient would never buy for himself (or herself) but is very happy to have. That means, of course, that you must know the person very well. Some of the items we’ve featured this year, whether apparel or accessories, from socks to penknives and from watches to gloves or to card cases, would make the perfect gift, but you know your loved one, so you be the judge.

As can be seen in our posts (and our mosaic of some of our favorite things), we’ve featured brands that we like and stores we patronize, but there are many more out there. We would still, however, like to give a special thanks to GQ magazine for its ongoing support and to the venerable merchants Brooks Brothers and Bergdorf Goodman for their early endorsements. One could do far worse than visiting them or their sites and buying a thing or two, for yourself or as a gift.

2014 will bring many more posts—and new collaborations that will be featured in our General Store. Look out for the sunglasses—pictured in the mosaic bottom right—as our first in the New Year. Oh, and a very Happy one to you and yours…

  1. Thank you for educating me about the finer things in life; from being a gentleman to understanding style.
Wishing you a Merry Christmas and a very happy and prosperous year. Keep up the good work.

  2. As someone who grew up elsewhere and who has only lived in America (mostly New York) as a young adult it’s been refreshing to read a blog based here that has a touch of international flavour and an appreciation for classic (and not so classic) finely crafted goods. As the owner of several Filson bags I thought the Filson bag post with the self-applied monogram was particularly great. I recently skimmed through your entire archive and look forward to what next year has to bring. Thank you and a Happy New Year.

  3. What a wonderful collage of House of Majd. Mr Majd, you are such an inspiration. Have a great holiday season and wish you a happy, healthy and successful New Year. Thank you.

  4. Greetings,

Huge fan of the blog. I was wondering if you could enlighten me as to the maker of the beautiful slippers in the second row, the third from the left. Thanks much and keep up the great work!

    Best,
    Andrew
